Austria’s Olympic hopeful in free skiing, Luca Tribondeau, travels all around the world to pursue his extreme sport. As the new brand ambassador of DAVOSA, he tests his favourite models under real extreme conditions. We met him for an interview.
DAVOSA: Luca, you come from Austria, so skiing must be second nature to you. At what age did you first stand on a pair of skis?
Luca: I learnt to ski at the age of three. I was on skis almost as soon as I was standing. I’ve always really enjoyed skiing, and I used to do ski racing up to the age of twelve.
DAVOSA: And what made you switch from ski racing to freeskiing?
Luca: I always tried to follow in the footsteps of my brother Fabio. (laughs) He took up freeskiing and that made me really want to try it too. I quickly realised that this discipline was perfect for me. I found the tricks really easy and I loved trying out new things. And now I can’t imagine anything I’d rather be doing.
DAVOSA: It sounds like you found your perfect niche. And your success speaks for itself: fourth place at the 2014 X-Games Big Air, fifth at the 2015 Red Bull Playstreets, and you also took part in the Olympic Games in Sotchi. Our congratulations! How do you spend your time when you’re not skiing?
Luca: I love all kinds of sports, especially outdoor ones. If I’m not freeski training, I look for other boards I can strap onto my feet. I love water sports of all kinds, especially surfing and windsurfing.
DAVOSA: And when you take a break from sports? What do you do to relax?
Luca: As you can see from social media sites such as Facebook or Instagram, I love photography. I enjoy photographing things to make them look their best without appearing contrived. It’s a creative challenge to set up a good shot and get the best from your subjects.
DAVOSA: You’ve been the new brand ambassador for DAVOSA since July 2015. What made you choose to work with us?
Luca: With my lifestyle you have to be able to rely on your equipment 100%. The same is true for the watch I wear. The quality of DAVOSA watches impressed me immediately, and also the huge diversity of DAVOSA models. Of course the sports watches were the ones that appealed to me the most. DAVOSA has a whole lot to offer here. It wasn’t easy to choose, because I like so many of your models.
DAVOSA: That’s something we like to hear! But in the end you chose the Argonautic with automatic movement and the Speedline with quartz movement. Why these two watches?
Luca: Both models are functional, striking and stylish. I can wear them on any occasion and they go with any outfit. Because they’re so robust, I can also wear them for my sporting activities. The Argonautic is a particularly fine watch. It not only looks great on piste, it’s also the perfect companion when I’m taking time out on or in the water. And DAVOSA’s different watch straps that can be easily changed are exceptionally practical. This feature lets me choose whether I want to look more relaxed or more sporty.
DAVOSA: Thank you for talking to us, Luca. We look forward to working with you and wish you all the very best for your freeskiing. Especially for the 2015 World Cup in New Zealand, which is just around the corner.
Luca: Thank you. I’m about to go to Australia to start training. And then it’s the World Cup. I’ll definitely send you some photos, so you can have something to look forward to!
Freeskiing is an extreme skiing discipline. The idea is to perform a range of impressive tricks on skis and jump or slide over different obstacles. The skis you use for freeskiing are called twin tips: They have curved points at the front and back to enable you to ski and land backwards more easily. Freeskiing has been an Olympic discipline since 2014.
